Lessons from a Lamb

Lessons from a Lamb by Phil As much as I love my birthday, Christmas and Squirrel Appreciation Day (that's January 21st, in case you were wondering), this is my favorite week of the year. The week between Palm Sunday and Easter, often called Holy Week, not only encompasses Jesus's sacrificial crucifixion for our sins and His resurrection, it is also the rich fulfillment of so much that was hinted about and foreshadowed in the Old Testament. Let's take a look at just one example. Way back in...

Of Cacti and Christ by Phil For my birthday last month, we took a short trip to Arizona to visit one of my retired preacher buddies and his wife. We had an absolutely wonderful time of sightseeing, relaxing and catching up. One of our excursions was to Saguaro National Park near Tuscon, home of the world's largest cactus species, the Saguaro. Saguaro cacti can grow up to 45 feet tall, weigh 4,800 pounds and live 150 to 200 years. (Fun fact for trivia night, Saguaro don't start growing "arms"...

The Chisel Doesn't Choose by Phil One of the simplest and most useful tools in the woodshop is the chisel. Although chisels are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, they are basically a sharpened piece of metal with a handle attached. They can be used to carve intricate designs, precisely fine-tune a complex joint or remove a ribbon of wood so thin you can almost see through it. Chisels are also great for the unglamorous task of scraping excess dried glue off a project. The chisel...

Romance at the Reunion by Phil Let's wrap up our month-long look at love with a trip to the Old Testament. One of the Bible passages that has always left me scratching my head is Genesis 20. When Abraham was traveling through Gerar, he told everybody that his wife Sarah was his sister. Apparently he was afraid King Abimelek would take one look at Sarah and kill him so she could be the new queen. We don't know exactly how old Sarah is at this point, but taking into account the surrounding...

Love and Explosions by Phil One of Pam and my favorite activities to do together is watch movies. We would play tennis, but that involves getting off the sofa, so we stick to movies. That being said, we have very different taste in our entertainment preferences. (In case you haven't noticed, men and women are different, not better or worse, right or wrong, just different. Trust me, God knew what He was doing!) Pam enjoys movies with great stories and romantic gestures, I like to watch things...

The Missing Word by Phil With Valentine's Day just around the corner, I'd like to tackle one of the most controversial verses in the Bible - Ephesians 5:22: "Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord." You may be surprised to learn that one little word, "submit" (also found as "obey" or "be in subjection" depending on your translation) is not even in the original greek! A direct word for word translation reads more like, "Wives, to your own husbands as to the Lord."...

Bubba the Viking by Phil I love the game show "Family Feud". I have to admit I don't actually watch the full show, but I love the funny clips where host Steve Harvey reacts to some of the weirdest and wildest answers. If you've never seen the game, one hundred people are surveyed and two families compete to match answers given by the surveyees. My favorite part is when one family member will give the most stupid, obviously wrong answer, and the other family members will cheer, clap and yell...
