Gun-Toting Granny

JUST FOR FUN - Gun-Toting Granny by Phil

I'm a pretty non-violent person, in fact I don't even own a gun. I do however like action movies where the good guy puts a whooping on some bad dudes. Often the seemingly normal hero opens a secret door to reveal a room with a whole arsenal of weaponry. That's when my movie buddies and I let out an excited chuckle because we know heinies are about to be kicked! Movies are fictional and the battles fought are not real. At the end of the day, the actors will get up, wipe off the fake blood and return to their regular lives. But friends, we are in the middle of a real battle every day. Satan, the ultimate bad guy, "prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." - 1 Peter 5:8 That someone is you! And our adversary is no toothless lion. Ephesians 6 tells us he is armed with flaming arrows (I'm pretty sure that would be the equivalent of a machine gun today). Our spiritual warfare defensive arsenal consists of prayer and knowledge of the word of God, and in many cases we are facing the enemy with Nerf guns and water pistols. No wonder the the world continues to get farther and farther away from Godly virtues.

The great heroes in our spiritual battle may not look like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. In fact, the little white haired lady shuffling in with a cane might be the one to send shivers up the devil's spine. We can't see it, but she comes packing a lifetime filled with time in God's word and earnest prayer like a flame thrower against the devil's puny flaming arrows. Remember, "The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man (or woman!) availeth much." - James 5:16. Or as the New Century Version puts it, "When a believing person prays, great things happen."

"Stand against the devil and he will run away from you." - James 4:7 NLV. Friends, it's time to get the devil on the run! Strap on the "sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God" - Eph 5:18 and the flame thrower of fervent prayer, and let's whip some heinous heinie! Don't make the gospel gun-toting grannies do all the work, join the battle. The good news is the ultimate victory has already been assured by Christ's work on the cross, but there are still plenty of skirmishes left for us. God calls us to be warriors, not wimps.

"We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us."
- Romans 8:37

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline." - 2 Timothy 1:7

Suit up soldiers! Let's kick some demonic derriere!

More Than Conquerors by Phil On Easter Sunday the sermon was based on one of my favorite chapters in the Bible - Romans 8. I was following along in my Blue Letter Bible app*, and tapped on the phrase “more than conquerors” in verse 37. I knew from previous study that in the Greek this phrase is just one word - Hypernikao, but I’d never looked at the tense of the word. I’m not a Greek scholar, but here’s what I understand. In ancient or Biblical greek, each verb has one of four moods, three...

Keep it Simple! by Phil I have a whole new appreciation for God. Let me explain… Our family has always loved games. As the kid’s were growing up, we had regular game nights, and now that they have moved on, we have a dinner and game night once a week with my mom. Playing games is a lot more engaging than plopping in front of the TV and it keeps the wheels clicking in the old noggin. In between my woodworking commissions I like to experiment with projects to see where my creativity takes me....

Happy April, He is Risen indeed!! What better way to wrap up March than by celebrating our Savior's resurrection. Phil finished his three-month stay as interim worship coordinator at Big Creek Baptist Church on Easter Sunday. What a wonderful congregation who were open to Phil's unique style of worship leading. We made some great friends, and we'll always treasure our time there. In fact, we are going back on April 21st to share our ministry during the morning service so they can get a...
