M.O.O. by Phil

I had lunch with my friend Mike this week and our conversation wound around to our favorite creative endeavors. We both love music, but he is also a very talented photographer. He mentioned how his wife would wait patiently (most of the time) while he would wander off in a field and take pictures of “weeds.” He shared that when he photographs “weeds,” he thinks of Luke 12:27 - "consider the wildflowers: they don’t do anything, but I tell you that the richest king in all his trappings couldn’t match one of these." (his paraphrase). Mike sometimes posts his photos on Facebook and is overwhelmed with comments on how beautiful they are. He is quick to respond that God made the flowers, he just took time to notice them.

That really struck a chord with me, because that is the same way I feel about these devotional thoughts I share each week. Most of the time I point out a scripture that is frequently overlooked or a life experience that many would consider insignificant or coincidence. When these scriptures, events and “weeds” (hidden in plain sight), are brought into focus, they are just one more example of God’s glory and another reason to praise Him.

Mike and I both feel this is our calling, to notice and share what is commonly overlooked. I joked that this ministry should have a title, and came up with the Ministry Of Observation, or M.O.O. for short. (I’ll try not to make this my “sacred cow.” (pun fully intended!!))

I’ve mentioned this topic before, I even developed a talk on the subject I’ve given a few times. But maybe today we need a reminder to keep our eyes open for evidence of God sprinkled around us all the time. We need more ministers of observation. The pay isn’t great, but the reward of seeing God at work is priceless.

So fellow and future Moo-ers, keep your eyes open. Take a picture, write a post, tell a story… just share what you see. There is plenty of evidence of evil in the news today, the world needs proof that God is still alive and well and working all around us.

What are you waiting for, get a moo-ve on!

Sharing what we “herd”,
Phil and Pam

More Than Conquerors by Phil On Easter Sunday the sermon was based on one of my favorite chapters in the Bible - Romans 8. I was following along in my Blue Letter Bible app*, and tapped on the phrase “more than conquerors” in verse 37. I knew from previous study that in the Greek this phrase is just one word - Hypernikao, but I’d never looked at the tense of the word. I’m not a Greek scholar, but here’s what I understand. In ancient or Biblical greek, each verb has one of four moods, three...

Keep it Simple! by Phil I have a whole new appreciation for God. Let me explain… Our family has always loved games. As the kid’s were growing up, we had regular game nights, and now that they have moved on, we have a dinner and game night once a week with my mom. Playing games is a lot more engaging than plopping in front of the TV and it keeps the wheels clicking in the old noggin. In between my woodworking commissions I like to experiment with projects to see where my creativity takes me....

Happy April, He is Risen indeed!! What better way to wrap up March than by celebrating our Savior's resurrection. Phil finished his three-month stay as interim worship coordinator at Big Creek Baptist Church on Easter Sunday. What a wonderful congregation who were open to Phil's unique style of worship leading. We made some great friends, and we'll always treasure our time there. In fact, we are going back on April 21st to share our ministry during the morning service so they can get a...
