JUST FOR FUN - The World's Easiest Job Search by Phil

Looking for a new job is no fun. Resumes, applications, waiting, interviews, waiting, more interviews, waiting, "the position has been filled." Start over. Yuck.

Wouldn't it be nice if God just stepped in and said, "Hey you, here's your job. Get to work." In at least one case, He did!

The Lord said to him (Elijah), “Go back the way you came, and go to the Desert of Damascus. When you get there, anoint Hazael king over Aram. Also, anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king over Israel, and anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel Meholah to succeed you as prophet. - 1 Kings 19:15

Very cool! So it's time to welcome Elisha to the prophet business with a big ceremony with cake and really bad punch, right? Nope.

So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak around him. Elisha then left his oxen and ran after Elijah. - 1 Kings 19:19-20a

That's it - no ordination service, no praying over, not even a new robe with his name embroidered on the label. Elijah apparently didn't even say anything, just tossed his cloak and walked away! That's got to be the shortest job interview in history. Just throw the cloak and bada-bing - You're a prophet.

Everyone in ministry has a different story of their calling, but I've got to admit, that's a pretty cool way to hear from the Lord. Of course, with the bathing habits of the time, it may have been one of the stinkiest ways to be called as well.

I hope we all are constantly praying for God to use us in His work. If you're still breathing, He's not done with you! Now, if you see a weird looking guy approaching holding out his coat...

Honored to serve,
Phil and Pam

(Interesting side note for trivia night - this is where we get the phrase "pass the mantle" to mean transfer of authority. "Mantle" is the KJV word for cloak. Don't you feel smarter?)

Lessons from a Lamb by Phil As much as I love my birthday, Christmas and Squirrel Appreciation Day (that's January 21st, in case you were wondering), this is my favorite week of the year. The week between Palm Sunday and Easter, often called Holy Week, not only encompasses Jesus's sacrificial crucifixion for our sins and His resurrection, it is also the rich fulfillment of so much that was hinted about and foreshadowed in the Old Testament. Let's take a look at just one example. Way back in...

Of Cacti and Christ by Phil For my birthday last month, we took a short trip to Arizona to visit one of my retired preacher buddies and his wife. We had an absolutely wonderful time of sightseeing, relaxing and catching up. One of our excursions was to Saguaro National Park near Tuscon, home of the world's largest cactus species, the Saguaro. Saguaro cacti can grow up to 45 feet tall, weigh 4,800 pounds and live 150 to 200 years. (Fun fact for trivia night, Saguaro don't start growing "arms"...

The Chisel Doesn't Choose by Phil One of the simplest and most useful tools in the woodshop is the chisel. Although chisels are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, they are basically a sharpened piece of metal with a handle attached. They can be used to carve intricate designs, precisely fine-tune a complex joint or remove a ribbon of wood so thin you can almost see through it. Chisels are also great for the unglamorous task of scraping excess dried glue off a project. The chisel...
