Cinco de Yummy!

Cinco de Yummy! by Phil

I'm counting down the days to Cinco de Mayo, which celebrates Mexico's victory over the French on May 5, 1862. Strangely enough, Cinco de Mayo is an American holiday and rarely celebrated in Mexico. Either way, it's a great excuse to eat burritos and tamales! I'm personally in favor of all food related holidays. I love to eat Irish food on St. Patrick's Day, Chinese on the Chinese New Year, Italian on Valentine's Day (I'm not sure why, but who's arguing?), American comfort food on Thanksgiving, and ham on Easter (even though the OK for Jews to eat pig products didn't come until Peter's sheet experience in Acts 10, so Jesus wouldn't have been able to eat his own resurrection celebration meal!) In fact, I'm pushing for us to celebrate the Greek holiday of Ohi Day (literally "Day of the NO") when the Greek people told the Italians where they could stick their Ultimatum of 1940. (Why am I suddenly hungry for an Gyro?)

Anyhow, back to Cinco de Mayo. I like to think of chips and salsa as a perfect metaphor for our relationship with God - we are the chips and God is the salsa. Some people eat their chips plain. They still taste pretty good, but these folks are missing out on the wonderful explosion of flavor and satisfaction that is just a dip away. Others barely dip their chips in the salsa, getting just enough to taste, but not enough to bring any joy to their lives. And then there are people like me, who view the chip as only a vessel to scoop as much salsa as possible into their waiting mouths. You can always tell us salsa slurpers, for we often have stains on our shirts from salsa overflow.

So which one are you? Do you think your life is just fine without God? Beware, when troubled times come chomping, you may end up broken in pieces on the ground. Or are you a barely dipper? Maybe you attend church occasionally or pray in emergencies, but not enough to make any real difference in your life. My friend, you are missing out on the wonderful adventure of a life lived with God and the blessings, comfort, peace and joy he showers on his children. Sure, it may be a bit spicy at times, but life (and good Mexican food) isn't for wimps! Remember, "burning may endure for a bite, but joy cometh in the munching." - Psalm 30:5 MDT (Mexican Dining Translation)

I hope you're a slurper like me and constantly hungry for more of God. Our lives are just a vessel to experience more of what God has to offer, not just for ourselves, but to share with everyone we meet. Hey, the world might see our salsa stained shirts on May 5th, but may they see the shine of the Savior on our faces each and every day!

Viva la Jesus!

Hey friends, For the second time this year, our concert is flooded out. This evening's concert in Rockville, MO is going to be rescheduled for a later date. The recent rain has caused flooding in the area and they are supposed to get more this afternoon. Pray for those affected! We look forward to seeing our friends in that area when things dry up a bit. In the meantime, stay safe, put on one of our albums and we'll have a long distance sing-along! Blessings,Phil and Pam Click Here to Check...

More Than Conquerors by Phil On Easter Sunday the sermon was based on one of my favorite chapters in the Bible - Romans 8. I was following along in my Blue Letter Bible app*, and tapped on the phrase “more than conquerors” in verse 37. I knew from previous study that in the Greek this phrase is just one word - Hypernikao, but I’d never looked at the tense of the word. I’m not a Greek scholar, but here’s what I understand. In ancient or Biblical greek, each verb has one of four moods, three...

Keep it Simple! by Phil I have a whole new appreciation for God. Let me explain… Our family has always loved games. As the kid’s were growing up, we had regular game nights, and now that they have moved on, we have a dinner and game night once a week with my mom. Playing games is a lot more engaging than plopping in front of the TV and it keeps the wheels clicking in the old noggin. In between my woodworking commissions I like to experiment with projects to see where my creativity takes me....
