GOAT

GOAT by Phil

There is an acronym that is all the rage these days. With the recent Olympic Games and sports in general, I keep hearing people referred to as goats, not because they are hairy with horns, but because they are the Greatest Of All Time at something. Not to be pragmatic, but records are made to be broken, so “all time” would more accurately be stated “up to now” or “so far” or even “yet,” but I guess G.O.A.T.Y. just wouldn’t have the same ring. Personally, I see myself as more of a S.H.E.E.P. - Standard Human Exhibiting unExceptional Potential.

I’ve never been big on human accolades, but I do appreciate excellence and striving to be the best we can be. I tend to look at everything through the lens of the Bible and human “goats” don’t fare quite as well there. Matthew 25 we find...

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world...’ Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.’” - Matthew 25:31-34,41

This is one time when being a sheep doesn’t look so baaaaad! (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)

So what can we learn? The greatest human achievement isn’t enough to earn our way into heaven. What a relief! I can’t even fix our plumbing, how could I be trusted with my eternal salvation? What matters isn’t becoming a “good enough” sheep, it’s knowing the Good Shepherd.

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” - Ephesians 2:8-9

I may admire the GOATs, but I adore the Good Shepherd. Without Him, this lowly SHEEP wouldn't have a prayer.

Praising from the pasture,
Phil and Pam

Lunch with Jesus by Phil The only way we've been able to successfully minister the last 28 years is because of the support of some very faithful and generous people. We can't begin to express our gratitude to you for helping us fulfill God's call on our lives so long ago. It would be wonderful if generosity was a recognized trait of all Christians, but unfortunately, that is not the case. I've known friends in the food service industry who dreaded working on Sundays because the "church crowd"...

Welcome to September! The temperatures are beginning to fall, the kids are back in school, Labor Day is in the rear view mirror. That can only mean one thing... CHRISTMAS! (Sorry, didn't mean to give you a heart attack.) We are by no means ready for snow, but we are excited to announce the return of our Christmas Extravaganza to our home church - First Baptist of Lee's Summit. This year is going to be really special. The sanctuary has been completely renovated with state-of-the-art audio and...

To Mato or Not To Mato by Phil As Summer is slowly winding down, it's a great time to reflect on all the things the season brings - heat, humidity, annoying insects, heat, sunburn, heat... OK, so summer is not exactly my favorite season. But there is one thing that makes all the sweaty, sticky discomfort endurable - home grown tomatoes!!!!!! I'm not talking about those puny little grape-looking things you put on salads. I'm talking fist-sized, deep red, thin-skinned, meaty chunks of juicy...
