Bubba the Viking by Phil

I love the game show "Family Feud". I have to admit I don't actually watch the full show, but I love the funny clips where host Steve Harvey reacts to some of the weirdest and wildest answers. If you've never seen the game, one hundred people are surveyed and two families compete to match answers given by the surveyees. My favorite part is when one family member will give the most stupid, obviously wrong answer, and the other family members will cheer, clap and yell "Good answer, good answer," even though they know they are soon to hear the dreaded buzzer of defeat. I often think of this scene when I read 1 Kings 22. (Don't ask, my brain works in mysterious ways.)

Let me give you a 30 second recap. Ahab, king of Israel decides to go to war with Syria (also called Aram depending on your Bible translation). Ahab asks Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, if he'd like to go along for the ride. Things must have been pretty boring in Judah, so Jeho says, "Sure, why not! But maybe we should check with God to see if He's up for it." Ahab has restocked his prophet posse with 400 dudes after the previous bunch had all been killed by Elijah at the great Battle of Wet Bull in chapter 18. Ahab asks his prophets and they say, "Sure boss, go for it!" Jehoshaphat can tell these dudes are all "yes men" so he asks, "Isn't there a prophet around here that is not on your payroll?" Ahab answers, "There is one guy named Macaiah, but he always gives me bad news. I'll send for him."

While they are waiting, one of the payroll prophets named Zedekiah made a hat with big iron horns (I'm picturing something like a viking helmet). Here's where my "Family Feud" moment comes in. Apparently Zed puts on this helmet and runs around the throne room yelling "You can all wear hats like this and stick it to the bad guys!" All the other prophets cheered, clapped and yelled, "Good answer, good answer!" (It may not have gone down exactly like this, but read the chapter, that's the general idea!)

To wrap up the chapter, Macaiah shows up and ßgives bad news which Ahab promptly ignores. Ahab goes to battle anyway and is killed just like Macaiah predicted. The end.

So what can we take away from this fascinating piece of history? Don't ask God what you should do if you aren't going to do what He says. That's wasting your time and His, and just won't work out very good for anybody.

As a bonus tip, if your preacher shows up this Sunday wearing a Viking helmet, it might be time to look for a new church.

Keep following Jesus,
Phil and Pam

Cinco de Yummy! by Phil I'm counting down the days to Cinco de Mayo, which celebrates Mexico's victory over the French on May 5, 1862. Strangely enough, Cinco de Mayo is an American holiday and rarely celebrated in Mexico. Either way, it's a great excuse to eat burritos and tamales! I'm personally in favor of all food related holidays. I love to eat Irish food on St. Patrick's Day, Chinese on the Chinese New Year, Italian on Valentine's Day (I'm not sure why, but who's arguing?), American...

More Than Conquerors by Phil On Easter Sunday the sermon was based on one of my favorite chapters in the Bible - Romans 8. I was following along in my Blue Letter Bible app*, and tapped on the phrase “more than conquerors” in verse 37. I knew from previous study that in the Greek this phrase is just one word - Hypernikao, but I’d never looked at the tense of the word. I’m not a Greek scholar, but here’s what I understand. In ancient or Biblical greek, each verb has one of four moods, three...
