Love and Explosions

Love and Explosions by Phil

One of Pam and my favorite activities to do together is watch movies. We would play tennis, but that involves getting off the sofa, so we stick to movies. That being said, we have very different taste in our entertainment preferences. (In case you haven't noticed, men and women are different, not better or worse, right or wrong, just different. Trust me, God knew what He was doing!) Pam enjoys movies with great stories and romantic gestures, I like to watch things blow up. She likes movies that touch the heart, I prefer movies with flying body parts. Is it any coincidence that when God gave instructions for healthy marriages, He took this into consideration?

We'll start with the ladies. To continue where I left off in a previous devotion, Ephesians 5:22-24 says, "Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything." The first part addresses the female need for emotional connection. (The love part.) This is followed by a long explanation of how this is to work. Why? Because women love details! Ask a guy about a newborn and you'll be lucky to find out if it was a boy or girl. Ask a gal and you'll get name, length, weight, eye color, hair color, length of labor, and how the father was totally clueless during the whole birthing process. God graciously provided details for wives to explain His thought process.

Not so with the guys. God skips the details and goes right for the action. Verses 25-29 state, "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church." Look at the action - loving by giving himself up, cleansing her, presenting her. Fellas, we've got a job to do! God knew that deep down, all of us guys want to be heroes, and what's more heroic than the ultimate sacrifice of giving your life for your leading lady? God also knew that men tend to focus on ourselves, so He brings in the part about taking care of our own bodies so we can relate. This may come as a shock to all the wives who dust around their hubbies as we sit on the sofa, but we guys not only like to think of ourselves as super heroes, we like to think we look like one, too. Just watch a guy suck in his gut when he glances in a mirror. Yup, still got it!

"So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them." - Genesis 1:27. God made men and women to be different, and He didn't apologize for that. Neither should we. We're all made in the image of God, and that's pretty amazing. Treasure the differences. Guys, keep trying to be the hero, and ladies, keep loving us when we fall short.

And if you're lucky, maybe tonight you can find a movie with love and explosions!

Blissfully yours,
Phil and Pam

Hey friends, For the second time this year, our concert is flooded out. This evening's concert in Rockville, MO is going to be rescheduled for a later date. The recent rain has caused flooding in the area and they are supposed to get more this afternoon. Pray for those affected! We look forward to seeing our friends in that area when things dry up a bit. In the meantime, stay safe, put on one of our albums and we'll have a long distance sing-along! Blessings,Phil and Pam Click Here to Check...

Cinco de Yummy! by Phil I'm counting down the days to Cinco de Mayo, which celebrates Mexico's victory over the French on May 5, 1862. Strangely enough, Cinco de Mayo is an American holiday and rarely celebrated in Mexico. Either way, it's a great excuse to eat burritos and tamales! I'm personally in favor of all food related holidays. I love to eat Irish food on St. Patrick's Day, Chinese on the Chinese New Year, Italian on Valentine's Day (I'm not sure why, but who's arguing?), American...

More Than Conquerors by Phil On Easter Sunday the sermon was based on one of my favorite chapters in the Bible - Romans 8. I was following along in my Blue Letter Bible app*, and tapped on the phrase “more than conquerors” in verse 37. I knew from previous study that in the Greek this phrase is just one word - Hypernikao, but I’d never looked at the tense of the word. I’m not a Greek scholar, but here’s what I understand. In ancient or Biblical greek, each verb has one of four moods, three...
