Remember... or not.

JUST FOR FUN - Remember... or not. by Phil

The new year brings many things to our family, one being (at least for the past several years) new health insurance. I think we've been with every major carrier, and just when we get settled in they either discontinue our plan or the prices raise far beyond what we can pay. So far, our new plan seems the best we've had in a while, covering most of our doctors and the hospitals in our area.

One of the things that impressed me was a welcome call where a very nice man (who actually spoke English as a first language!) explained my benefits and answered any questions I had. He also led me through a brief health questionnaire so they would have a baseline of my current health and suggest any services that might be helpful.

If you haven't guessed by now, I like to brighten everyone's day with a little humor, so when asked, "Do you deal with any memory loss?" I responded, "Not that I can remember." There was silence on the line for a minute and then we both had a good laugh.

I think my memory is pretty normal for my age. Yes, I do walk into rooms and wonder, "What was I coming in here for?" and spend a few minutes almost daily trying to find where I left my cell phone. (Pam is used to calling me while I scour the house listening for a familiar ring, unless I forgot to turn the ringer on, in which case I am listening for the buzzing sound of vibration mode, which is becoming harder as my hearing gets worse with each passing year. I think I'll duct tape my phone to my arm. Problem solved! Now where did I put the duct tape????)

Anyhow, that conversation got me thinking... I know I forget sometimes, but how many things do I forget that I don't remember that I forgot? With a little prompting and retracing of steps, I usually remember what I've forgotten, but how do you remember what you've forgotten that you don't remember you forgot? (Anybody else confused yet?)

Unlike me, God has a perfect memory, so when He says something like, "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” (Hebrews 8:12), you can be assured that He will remember to forget! God's forgetting is a choice not to hold those sins against us in the future - once forgiven, always forgiven! Praise the Lord for that.

Sometimes we all feel alone and forgotten by God. That's when we need to cling to the promise God made to his people when they were facing one their greatest challenges - "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you." - Deuteronomy 31:6

As we face the uncertainties of a new year to come, this is a great time to thank God for his perfect faithfulness. You are never forgotten by Him!

Ain't it the truth!

P.S. Wait! I hear ringing! Now where did I put that phone???

Cinco de Yummy! by Phil I'm counting down the days to Cinco de Mayo, which celebrates Mexico's victory over the French on May 5, 1862. Strangely enough, Cinco de Mayo is an American holiday and rarely celebrated in Mexico. Either way, it's a great excuse to eat burritos and tamales! I'm personally in favor of all food related holidays. I love to eat Irish food on St. Patrick's Day, Chinese on the Chinese New Year, Italian on Valentine's Day (I'm not sure why, but who's arguing?), American...

More Than Conquerors by Phil On Easter Sunday the sermon was based on one of my favorite chapters in the Bible - Romans 8. I was following along in my Blue Letter Bible app*, and tapped on the phrase “more than conquerors” in verse 37. I knew from previous study that in the Greek this phrase is just one word - Hypernikao, but I’d never looked at the tense of the word. I’m not a Greek scholar, but here’s what I understand. In ancient or Biblical greek, each verb has one of four moods, three...

Keep it Simple! by Phil I have a whole new appreciation for God. Let me explain… Our family has always loved games. As the kid’s were growing up, we had regular game nights, and now that they have moved on, we have a dinner and game night once a week with my mom. Playing games is a lot more engaging than plopping in front of the TV and it keeps the wheels clicking in the old noggin. In between my woodworking commissions I like to experiment with projects to see where my creativity takes me....
