Romance at the Reunion by Phil

Let's wrap up our month-long look at love with a trip to the Old Testament.

One of the Bible passages that has always left me scratching my head is Genesis 20. When Abraham was traveling through Gerar, he told everybody that his wife Sarah was his sister. Apparently he was afraid King Abimelek would take one look at Sarah and kill him so she could be the new queen. We don't know exactly how old Sarah is at this point, but taking into account the surrounding chapters, she had to be at least in her late 80s. Sarah must have been the original sexy senior citizen! The story is strange enough, but then we get verse 12 and find out Abraham wasn't lying! Sarah was not only his wife, she was his half sister!!!

Abraham replied, “I said to myself, ‘There is surely no fear of God in this place, and they will kill me because of my wife.’ Besides, she really is my sister, the daughter of my father though not of my mother; and she became my wife. And when God had me wander from my father’s household, I said to her, ‘This is how you can show your love to me: Everywhere we go, say of me, “He is my brother.”’” - Genesis 20:11-13

Some people show affection with flowers and chocolates, but if saying, "He's my brother!" is your love language, who am I to judge? If you're not grossed out yet, read on...

By Chapter 24, Abraham is very old and is concerned because his son Isaac hasn't found a special someone yet. Abraham tells his servant to go back to his old stomping ground and find Isaac a wife from one of his own relatives. Sure enough, the servant discovers Rebekah, the granddaughter of Milkah, who was both the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor and the daughter of Abraham's other brother Haran. (I'm pretty sure Hallmark does not make a card to cover this.) In the end, the two fell in love and Isaac married Rebekah, who was also his cousin. And you think your family is confusing!

Comedian Jeff Foxworthy once said, "If you go to the family reunion to meet women... you might be a redneck."

Or maybe you're just trying to do it the Biblical way!

Somewhat grossed out,
Phil and Pam

Hey friends, For the second time this year, our concert is flooded out. This evening's concert in Rockville, MO is going to be rescheduled for a later date. Cinco de Yummy! by Phil I'm counting down the days to Cinco de Mayo, which celebrates Mexico's victory over the French on May 5, 1862. Strangely enough, Cinco de Mayo is an American holiday and rarely celebrated in Mexico. Either way, it's a great excuse to eat burritos and tamales! I'm personally in favor of all food related holidays. I love to eat Irish food on St. Patrick's Day, Chinese on the Chinese New Year, Italian on Valentine's Day (I'm not sure why, but who's arguing?), American...

More Than Conquerors by Phil On Easter Sunday the sermon was based on one of my favorite chapters in the Bible - Romans 8. I was following along in my Blue Letter Bible app*, and tapped on the phrase “more than conquerors” in verse 37. I knew from previous study that in the Greek this phrase is just one word - Hypernikao, but I’d never looked at the tense of the word. I’m not a Greek scholar, but here’s what I understand. In ancient or Biblical greek, each verb has one of four moods, three...
