Welcome to the Hall of Frame

Welcome to the Hall of Frame by Phil

When I saw this meme, I couldn't help but chuckle. It brought to mind many similar humorous sights around our house over the years - not initiated by Pam, but by yours truly. I also had some help from our youngest daughter, who thought the concept of April Fool's was too big to celebrate just one day. (She hasn't lived at home for years, but I still occasionally find a googly eye stuck somewhere). What makes this meme funny is not the sign (that's a very good sentiment in the kitchen), or even the room (the older I get the more time I spend there). But when the two are put together, they imply a message Pam would call "inappropriate," usually with a roll of the eye and shake of the head. (Trust me, I speak from great experience.). She has repeatedly (and unsuccessfully) tried to teach me the importance of being "appropriate."

This idea came up recently in a devotion I read about picture frames. Frames come in all shapes, sizes and styles - everything from the very basic to incredibly ornate - but they all have one thing in common. An appropriate frame doesn't draw attention to itself but complements the image it is framing. The picture is the star of the show. The frame's job is to present the picture in a pleasing, non-distracting manner. A plain, rustic frame might be perfect for a bathroom sign, but it would look wrong on a great masterpiece hung in a prestigious museum. Likewise, an ornate, gilded frame around the Mona Lisa would look out of place around the "If I stirred it, it's homemade" sign in our kitchen.

The same is true of our relationship with Jesus - He is the picture, we are the frame. Our life purpose should be to present Him to the world, not distract or draw attention to ourselves. And unlike a static work of art, God is multifaceted. Each encounter with Him is fresh and new, meeting us wherever we are at that moment. If we are to share Jesus with others, we can't stick to being just one frame. Some need to feel His loving touch and know that He is approachable and accessible. Some need to feel His majestic, miracle working power and know that He is able to meet their need, no matter how impossible that appears. How we present and represent Jesus is very important. I think that's what Paul meant when he said, "I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some." - 1 Corinthians 9:22

My goal has always been that those I meet are not so impressed or distressed by me that they are distracted from the Christ who lives in me. Peter put it much more eloquently, "But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect." - 1 Peter 3:15

In other words, Jesus is the big picture. Your job is to be an appropriate frame.

Keep spreading the good news,
Phil and Pam

PS. Representing Jesus doesn't make you a square. In fact, most frames are more of a rectangle.

Sweeter Than Honey by Phil Here I am, your purveyor of unusual, obscure, and probably unnecessary factoids. Today's tidbit of trivial knowledge - Honey never expires. Yes, that tasty treat straight from the bee's behind will last forever if stored properly. (Actually, that is not exactly true. Honey doesn't come from the bee's bottom, they actually regurgitate it into other bee's mouths until it is finally deposited in the honeycomb. Are you hungry yet?) This whole process reduces the water...

Lunch with Jesus by Phil The only way we've been able to successfully minister the last 28 years is because of the support of some very faithful and generous people. We can't begin to express our gratitude to you for helping us fulfill God's call on our lives so long ago. It would be wonderful if generosity was a recognized trait of all Christians, but unfortunately, that is not the case. I've known friends in the food service industry who dreaded working on Sundays because the "church crowd"...
