Smokin'

Smokin' by Phil Mowing season came early this year, so I gassed up my mower and hit the back forty. (We actually only have 1.5 acres, so I guess that would be the back 3/4). I got about halfway through when it was time for lunch so I pulled up to the back patio. When I shut the mower off I noticed something smelled a little burny, so I opened up the engine cover. Smoke billowed out and there was oil everywhere. Oh, no!! After the motor cooled off a bit I discovered the problem. Apparently a...

Welcome to May! Here we are, smack dab in the middle of what I like to call celebration month. We've already celebrated May Day (1st), National Day of Prayer (2nd), Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you!), the Kentucky Derby (also on the 4th), Cinco do Mayo (5th), and my personal favorite - International No Diet Day on May 6th. Still to come are Mother's Day, high school and college graduations, and Memorial Day. There are also plenty of more obscure but equally celebratory events such as...

Hey friends, For the second time this year, our concert is flooded out. This evening's concert in Rockville, MO is going to be rescheduled for a later date. The recent rain has caused flooding in the area and they are supposed to get more this afternoon. Pray for those affected! We look forward to seeing our friends in that area when things dry up a bit. In the meantime, stay safe, put on one of our albums and we'll have a long distance sing-along! Blessings,Phil and Pam Click Here to Check...

Cinco de Yummy! by Phil I'm counting down the days to Cinco de Mayo, which celebrates Mexico's victory over the French on May 5, 1862. Strangely enough, Cinco de Mayo is an American holiday and rarely celebrated in Mexico. Either way, it's a great excuse to eat burritos and tamales! I'm personally in favor of all food related holidays. I love to eat Irish food on St. Patrick's Day, Chinese on the Chinese New Year, Italian on Valentine's Day (I'm not sure why, but who's arguing?), American...

More Than Conquerors by Phil On Easter Sunday the sermon was based on one of my favorite chapters in the Bible - Romans 8. I was following along in my Blue Letter Bible app*, and tapped on the phrase “more than conquerors” in verse 37. I knew from previous study that in the Greek this phrase is just one word - Hypernikao, but I’d never looked at the tense of the word. I’m not a Greek scholar, but here’s what I understand. In ancient or Biblical greek, each verb has one of four moods, three...

Keep it Simple! by Phil I have a whole new appreciation for God. Let me explain… Our family has always loved games. As the kid’s were growing up, we had regular game nights, and now that they have moved on, we have a dinner and game night once a week with my mom. Playing games is a lot more engaging than plopping in front of the TV and it keeps the wheels clicking in the old noggin. In between my woodworking commissions I like to experiment with projects to see where my creativity takes me....

Happy April, He is Risen indeed!! What better way to wrap up March than by celebrating our Savior's resurrection. Phil finished his three-month stay as interim worship coordinator at Big Creek Baptist Church on Easter Sunday. What a wonderful congregation who were open to Phil's unique style of worship leading. We made some great friends, and we'll always treasure our time there. In fact, we are going back on April 21st to share our ministry during the morning service so they can get a...

Lessons from a Lamb by Phil As much as I love my birthday, Christmas and Squirrel Appreciation Day (that's January 21st, in case you were wondering), this is my favorite week of the year. The week between Palm Sunday and Easter, often called Holy Week, not only encompasses Jesus's sacrificial crucifixion for our sins and His resurrection, it is also the rich fulfillment of so much that was hinted about and foreshadowed in the Old Testament. Let's take a look at just one example. Way back in...

Of Cacti and Christ by Phil For my birthday last month, we took a short trip to Arizona to visit one of my retired preacher buddies and his wife. We had an absolutely wonderful time of sightseeing, relaxing and catching up. One of our excursions was to Saguaro National Park near Tuscon, home of the world's largest cactus species, the Saguaro. Saguaro cacti can grow up to 45 feet tall, weigh 4,800 pounds and live 150 to 200 years. (Fun fact for trivia night, Saguaro don't start growing "arms"...

The Chisel Doesn't Choose by Phil One of the simplest and most useful tools in the woodshop is the chisel. Although chisels are available in a variety of shapes and sizes, they are basically a sharpened piece of metal with a handle attached. They can be used to carve intricate designs, precisely fine-tune a complex joint or remove a ribbon of wood so thin you can almost see through it. Chisels are also great for the unglamorous task of scraping excess dried glue off a project. The chisel...
